The painting “ Sanctuary” is inspired by the heroic actions of Captain Tony Scotti and some of his Military Police officers of the No.5 Canadian Provost Company, preventing a group of rogue Moroccan soldiers known as the Goumiers belonging to the Corps Expéditionnaire Français (CEF) from crossing the Sacco River near the bridge of the mil (Ponte della Mola ) in late May or early June 1944.
The Sacco River was the boundary between the CEF and the Canadian Corps as they advanced through the Liri Valley toward Rome. The Goumiers lacked the training and discipline of the regular army troops and were greatly feared by the defending German soldiers. They also conducted widespread acts of violence and sexual brutality against the civilian population.
Historians Paolo Sbarbada in Italy and Colonel retired Paul Thobo-Carlsen here in Canada have been very generous in sharing their respective knowledge on the subject to ensure that the painting is as accurate as possible in every detail, from the bridge that the retreating German soldiers destroyed, to the vehicles, uniforms, and insignias.
The mother and daughter are inspired by the “La Mamma Ciociara” monument situated in Castro dei Volsci, Italy.
